Rumours are current with regard to the peace and war ques- tions during the coming Sino-Japanese negotiations; and with the re-erection by the Japanese of barbed-wire barricades and thei installation of military telephones at Shanghai, the number of Chinese who have evacuated from Hongkew and Chapei to the French Concession has been greatly increased. Martial law has been declared in Greater Shanghai and the Province of Kiangsu More British, American and French warships are stationed at Shanghai, and the tense situation of 1932 has reappeared. The Chinese Government is doing its best to stop the rumours and calm the people.

The Japanese envoy. Mr. Kawashima, left Nanking for Shang- hai yesterday afternoon, and he will return to Japan on Saturday. The date of the fourth meeting between Messrs. Chang Chun and Kawagoe has not yet been fixed. The latter arranged to visit the Generalissimo this afternoon instead of yesterday afternoon, as previously reported. It is definitely learned that the Generalis simo will not discuss Sino-Japanese problems with Mr. Kawagoe.
