LESSONS LEARNED IN PRACTICE MATCH AT K.C.C.
(By "L. B. W.") THE practice match at the Kowloon Cricket Club which began on Saturday, and was con- tinued yesterday between the Interport cricket team and an eleven drawn from the Rest of the Colony provided plenty of batting practice for the Colony team on the first day when, after dis- missing the Rest for 143 runs, they went on to score 160 for 4 before stumps were drawn.
One interesting fact was revealed on Saturday, and that is the Interport skipper. Alec Pearce, will probably send Lieut C. C. Garthwaite out to open the Colony innings against Shang- hai. From what I saw of this pair on Saturday, it, will be a move in the right direction, especially as Garthwaite seems 90 able to adapt himself to conditions. On Saturday he played an innings in which restraint and enterprise were noticeable at the same time.

PLUCKY BRITON PRAISED
New York, September 4. 7HILE 20,000 spectators roared themselves hoarse, many of them in anger at what they believed had been a foul blow. Dave Crowley, of Clerkenwell, lost by a knockout his bid for the featherweight championship of the world, held, in the eyes of the New York State Athletic Com- mission, by Mike Belloise, of New York.
After a sparkling contest, in which up to the seventh round he appeared to be well on the road to victory, Crowley suddenly dropped to the floor in the ninth of the 15-round contest, and
was counted out. The time was 2 minutes 52 seconds. It was not immediately apparent that he had been struck, but it trans- pired that Belloise landed a hard, questionable right to the 'pit of the stomach during a clinch.
Many of the spectators thought the blow low, and Crowley and his manager were emphatic in that belief. Crowley, who was in great pain while being counted out, said after the fight: "I don't want to squeal, but I was hit dreadfully low."
His manager stated that the blow was unquestionably low,
