SOCIETY FOR PROTECTION OF
CHILDREN REPORTS
Inspectors of the Society for the Protection of Children, in their latest reports, state that malnutrition is on the increase amongst mothers of the poorer Chinese classes, many of whom have been found to be suffering from beri-beri. Reference to this fact was made at the monthly meeting of the Executive Committee of the Society, held on Monday evening, over which the Hon. Dr. R. H. Kotewall presided.
It was stated that the incidence of beri-beri was largely due to mothers living chiefly on rice, which was the only diet they could afford. In cases dealt with by the Society, soup is being supplied, this containing essentials, lacking in a rice diet.
