New Incident Feared At Pakhoi

19TH ROUTE ARMY IN POSSESSION ON ARRIVAL OF JAPANESE GUNBOAT

Canton, To-day. When the news reached here last night that the 19th Route Army under Divisional Commander Yung Chao-woon still occupied Pakhoi, and that the Japanese gunboat Saga had arrived at the port yes- terday afternoon, the people in Canton were very apprehensive that new troubles may arise.

It will be recalled that Gen- eral Yung Chao-woon achieved fame when he was Garrison Commander of Wusung Fort during the Shanghai War in 1932.

General Ho Ying-ching, the Nanking Minister of the Army, has instructed General Yung to leave Pakhoi, so that the Japan- ese Consular representatives may investigate the Pakhoi "incident] with the Chinese officials there, but General Yung has ignored the instructions.

MADRID GOVT. NOT CO-OPERATING

ASPHYXIATING GASES TO BE USED

ULTIMATUM TO SAN SEBASTIAN

St. Jean de Luz, To-day.

No steps with regard to the possible use of poison-gas by the combatants in Spain are likely to be taken by the Powers at present. Dr. Branting, the former Swedish Premier, on his re- turn from Madrid, declared that the insurgents were preparing to employ asphyxiating gases against the Government forces.

Although the British Government had asked the British Am- bassador, Sir Henry Chilton, to convene the diplomatic corps to! consider the whole question of the possible use of poison-gas, no result was reached at the meeting on Thursday. The Italian Am bassador stated that it was impossible to deal with the matter since the Madrid Government did not think it worth while to fol low the efforts of the diplomatic corps to humanise the war. In the circumstances the diplomatic corps considers that no over- tures could well be made to the insurgent junta at Burgos on the matter.
