An official statement was issued here yesterday to the effect that the British steamer Gibelzerjon was stopped by a Spanish warship 10 miles off Melilla. The battle cruiser H.MS. Repulse and two destroyers are proceeding to the spot to investigate.
Reuter learns that, in view of the Spanish Government as- surances regarding the searching of British ships, official circles in London are not greatly perturbed by the incident, it being re- cognised that in the present state of confusion some misunder- standing of the orders might arise, though the incident is not use that could be allowed to pass unnoticed.
