G.O. ALLEN THE IDEAL CAPTAIN

NEXT BEST LEADER TO D. R. JARDINE NO MORE AUSTRALIAN THAN GRACE

London, July 9.

THINGS cricket in England point to G. O. Allen as captain of the M.C.C. team on the Austra- lian tour. It is suggested in London that the selection of an Australian-born to this distin- guished position may be a diplomatic gesture to Australia, and a salve for the body-line wounds inflicted a few years ago.

This is a sour, ungenerous sort of suggestion. G. O. Allen is no more an Australian cricketer than Charlie Bannerman; bom in Kent, was an English cricketer. He is no more an Australian than Percy McDonnell was an Englishman, for he was born in London. He is no more an Australian than H. H. Massie, born in Bendigo, was a Victorian. No more than Harry Boyle, born in Sydney, was a New South Welshman in cricket.

Any straw seems good enough upon which to bolster an anti- Australian cricket argument in some quarters of the old game's birth. What is the true angle of all this?

G. O. Allen is an English cricketer in every way, big and
