Measure Approved By

AWAITING ENDORSEMENT OF PARLIAMENT
Paris.
Pay will be doubled in all three French armed forces if Parliament adopts a proposal of; M. Daladier, Minister for Na-l tional Defence.
The proposal was approved by all the Cabinet at a meeting at the Prime Minister's resi dence, the Hotel Matignon, last month.
The measure may be regarded as a long-delayed reform. Soldiers of the French conscript army have always been under-paid in com- jparison with British soldier.
This doubling of pay is likely to place a beary charge on the coun- try's finances.
The 1936 Budget included near- ly £73,000,000 of purely military jexpenditure. The greater part of this, of course, is devoted to arma- ments and not to pay.
