SOUTHERN TROOPS IN HENGCHOW

NANKING FORCE AVOIDS CLASH BY RETIRING

ALARM IN SHANGHAI

[From Our Own Correspondent!

Canton, Yesterday. When asked whether it was true that Kwangsi troops have Jaken Hengchow (also known as Hengyang) in Hunan, a mem- ber of the South-west Political Council, this morning stated that this is possible as the troops are proceeding north to fight the Japanese aggressors.

The two Cantonese aviators were captured on last Saturday and not Monday, when they took reconnaisance flights over Heng- chow. The city was evacuated by Nanking troops late on Monday: in order to avoid a clash with the advancing Kwangsi troops.

Whether there will be an open break between Canton and Nanking is problematical, but some sort of negotiations are still going on in Nanking. The fact that no Nanking representatives are being sent here indicates that the Central authorities do not subscribe to the anti-Japanese policy of the South-west.

Canton propaganda is too high-sounding to make a favour-
