MRS. WILLS-MOODY MAY TAKE PART IN WIGHTMAN CUP SERIES

GERMANY RETAIN SCHOOLS' CUP

FINE PERFORMANCE BY

H. MERZ

ATHLETIC RECORDS AT WHITE CITY

(By Bevil Rudd)

London, April 20.

SEVEN German boys scored 56 points in the Public Schools Championships at the White City on Saturday, and thus retained the chal- lenge trophy for the Schule Schloss. Salem. Rutlish, sixth last year, were runners-up with 32 points.

Fifty of the German points were obtained in field events H. Merz followed up his javelin, discus and high jump expisīts: an Friday by winning the weight with the record nut of 48ft. Din. He would very probably have won a place in the hurdles had he not crashed at the ninth fight in his semi-final heat in a desperate attempt to beat U. St. G. Anderson, of St. John's, Leatherhead.

Nevertheless, his personal contribution to the Salem victory was 27 points, a point more than Bedford School totalind for third place.

Merz is anything but the proverbial field event strong man. Magnificently proportioned, there is a lithe suppleness and speed in all his movements, and his debonair keenness made him a de light to watch.

WIMBLEDON ON JUNE 12 AND 13

(By A. Wallis Myers)

London, April 21. THE British and American governing bodies are now team-building for the Wightman Cup, which will be decided at Wimbledon on June 12 and 13. American women have won the trophy for the last five years, three times in their own country and twice over here.

The selection of the right material is naturally important. America is anxious to maintain her unbeaten record since 1931: England is just as keen to turn over a new leaf.

The American team was announced yesterday - 80 per cent. of it. that is. Miss Helen Jacobs, Mrs. Fabyan. Miss Carolyn Babcock and Mrs. Var. Ryn have been named. A place will be kept open for Mrs. Moody, when the champion has made up her mind whether she will assist her country in the team match.

Wimbledon. If she follows last year's plan she will arrive in England about the end of May

or early June

It is possible that she may not desire to meet either Miss Round or Miss Stammers before the championship. The centre court, newly opened for the Wightman Cup, would be slower. Miss Round- was defeated on it in the Wight-:
