AMERICA'S AQUATIC HOPES FOR BERLIN
EXPERTS PREDICT WIN OVER JAPAN
TWO BRILLIANT QUARTETTES
(By George M. R. Holmes)
- :,:
New York, April 10.
SOME while ago Clarence Pinkston, who won the platform diving championship event at the Olympic Games in Antwerp, just 16 years ago, made the statement that he believed the American swimming team would defeat Japan in the Olympic Games at Berlin this summer.
It will be recalled that the representatives of the Rising Sun captured that part of the Olympic Games at Los Angeles in 1932. In fact, in only one of the men's swimming events and the two diving events did America's representatives win laurel wreaths. The women, however, were more successful, and there has been little feeling of doubt regarding their coming through again this

ESTABLISHED EVEN TIME RECORD
Singapore. May 1.
Judging from the showing which the men and women swimmers made in the recent United States indoor championships at Chicago, the material for winning teams in both divisions is available to America. It, therefore, seems to resolve itself into the question as to whether our Olympic swimming candidates are ready to put in the hard work necessary to getting into world- winning form.

A STUDY of the first 100 public school sports
to be completed shows gratifying improve- ment in field events which should be revealed at the Public School Challenge Cup meeting, at the White City, on Friday and Saturday.
This is not strictly a championship meeting. Teams are not officially entered by schools, and all competitors enter as indivi- duals. Nevertheless, the entries continue to increase, and the majority of the outstanding schoolboy athletes take part.
A further indication of enthusiasm for field events is to be found in this year's entry. For the four flat events, 100 yards,
