THE SCOTTISH
EXPRESS TRAGEDY
(Continued from Page #)
One hour, Mr. Huwke. I'll have a imessage dropped at the next station and they can 'phone ahead from there to the police. Nobody will be allowed to leave the station. Although I know of) you, of course) Mr. Hawke, that must also apply to you."
Again suspicion showed in his glance. It was a curious situation: for the great detective. He was
actually suspected of having mu dered the passenger:
"With your permission, guard." Hawke said, as he bent to examine. the body more closely.
The wound which had caused the man's death had been given by a very slender blade not inore than wix inches long. It had been driven into the base of the neck in such 10 way that it had pierced the cerebral corti, Death had been instantaneous.
Hawke took the guard by the arm and walked him to the small lobby at the end of the couch.
"A case of mistaken identity," the detective said
"Mistaken identity?"
"Yes, Hawke answered grimly. "That knife was meant for me!"
Hawke explained how the fussi- news of the dead man bad resulted in the change of seats just before, the train entered the tunnel.
"I don't want to go into details, guard," he added, "but there are. certain people who have very good reasons to desire my life. I must confess I did not expect an attack| en a non-stop train. It shows how! desperate thesc critninals are. Our one chance of catching the murderer is before our first stop. He will certainly find some way to get rid of his weapon before we arrive.
The attack was made froni behind, we can only suspect The passengers in that part of the mach, the official said.
Or in the couch behind."* That's out of the question, sir. Ch of the attendants would be in that Jobby. In the event of the.
lights failing, it's a regulation that ti himself

there.
"Good! Now, my table was: near the top of the couch. There
are five others behind it.
Every
seat is occupied, and so there are
forty suspects.
Sounds hopeless, Mr. Hawkċ."
"I'm not so sure, guard.

is see what we can find out by questioning.**
They re-entered the Pullman, med the guard sharply commanded fir passengers to return to their Sim They did so zeluctantly. and an embarrassed silence follow. ed. The faint clicking of wheels! and the rhythmical swaying of the train alone showed that the flier was still in motion.
Hawke glanced over the people! at the tables. Some of them looki ed defiant, others anxious. Herc and there was a man who was really angry, and one of two who were-aumised.
"I num afraid,' the detective said, that all of us are under uspicion. A man was killed by somebody who is still in this conch !**
Exelunations came from the passengers. People who did not know each other were instantly on their guned.
"If anybody has any evidence, to give. planse stand up." Hawke went on, Was any movement noticed in the aisle between the tables? Did any passenger notice another leave his seat?"
There was a long silence. Then lady who sat midway between the dead man and the rear of the
coach stood up.
"Something brushed by me just
after the lights went."
Kle.said.
"I am sure it was a land. I
thought it was one of the attend
ants.

The passenger in front of her
came to his feet.
"I had the saine experience," be said sharply. "I was about to take my cigarette out of my mouth, and I touched somebody's inund.**
You could not see anybody?" "Nobody. I was temporarily blinded by the failure of the lights.
Both passengers sat on the right- hand side of the aisle which cut the Pullman in half. Hawke's eyes narrowed, and a look of in- terest showed in them. Hel glanced at the people on the left side of the aisle.
"Just before the lights came on, when the murderer was creeping back to his seat, did anybody else. have the same experience?""]
Another man stood up. "Somebody rosted his fingert on my shoulder he said. **I suppose it was confused with the back of the seat. When I moved the hand was withdrawn rapidly."
