GRAPHIC PHOTOGRAPHS OF DEVASTATING FLOODS IN AMERICA
As the 20-foot flood roared into Johnstown, Pasedena, last month, marooning hundreds in the upper floors of buildings and homes and taking the lives of over 15 persons, fears were felt that the disaster of 1889, pictured above, would be repeated. The Red Cross rushed its full national staff into the stricken area, which included Pittsburgh and Cumberland, Maryland.

The population feared a repetition of the historie flood of 1869, in which 2,300 met death. The photograph shows the indescribable chaos that met the eye as the flood water receded in 1889.
