J. H. LEWIS TO MEET WINNER?

London, March 19.

J.

H. LEWIS, the American negro cruiser-

offered a bout in London this summer with the winner of the Jack Petersen vs. Jock McAvoy fight, by the Empress Stadium, Earl's Court, authorities.

It is understood that the terms, £3,000 and expenses, are ac-| ceptable to Lewis provided the bout is not a title fight, but there, is some difficulty regarding his American contracts. It is further understood that Lewis will be prepared to give his opponent a fight for the title in America later on.

With regard to the McAvoy-Petersen clash at Earl's Court on April 23 McAvoy will have the comforting moral support that. no one in the north believes he can be beaten. What is more, the backers of Petersen are just as hard to find in the south apart from Wales, where, naturally, he is regarded in the same unbeat able light as McAvoy. The purse is £9.000 which is one of the biggest ever offered for an indoor fight in England. will receive $4,600.

Tokyo, March 29.

Jiro Yamagishi, Japanese ten- nis player, will leave here soon for Europe by way of the Unit- ed States, to enter the Wimble dor championships, Domei learn- ed to-day.

The player, who was cheated of his chance to visit Europe when the Japan Lawn Tennis Associa- tion decided not to send a teata for the Davis Cup matches this year, because of lack of funds, will travel as the representative of the Keio University Tent.is team to which he belongs. His expenses will be borne by a spe- cial fund set up by wealthy Kcio graduates residing in Kobe and Osaka,

Petersen

Petersen has disappointed us often but his form in his last fight with Harvey was definite- ly good. McAvoy has captured the limelight with his smashing wins in America. His admirers think there is nothing in boxing [to-day to equal the power of his

Tokyo, March 1. ETERMINED not to relinquish their world swimming title to the United States in the coming Berlin Olympics without a terrific strug- gle, Japan's aquatic stars have been going through a term of intensive midwinter training to keep in condition for the competitions five months hence.

Japan's youthful swimming team swept sensationally through the aquatic section of the Los Angeles Olympics in 1932, capturing five of the six speed events.

The winter training, carried on in the indoor pool of one of the Tokyo universities, showed that Japan's champions have lost little of the speed which enabled them to win a dual meet from a selected American team in Tokyo last summer.

Among those showing the

A Great Trio

Other Japanese stars who have shown themselves ready for chain- pionship performances at Berlin Įnext summer are the great dis-} tance trio, Hiroshi Negami, Shozo Makino and Gen Ishiharada.

The Japanese are counting on them to take at least two of the

first three places in both the 1500- metre and 400-metre freestyle races at Berlin. Last summer the only American who could successfully challenge the speed and stamina of
