FRENCH AND ITALIAN PRESS COMMENT

"NO TURNING BACK NOW”

~CHINA MAIL ~ SPECIAL

Berlin, To-day.

The Fuehrer and Reich Chancellor announc- ed last night that so many assurances of loyalty had reached him from his supporters in the Reich and from those wishing him well in foreign coun- tries, both during the election campaign and after its close, that it would be a matter of impos- sibility to return the thanks individually, and he asked all who had supported him in this way to accept by public announcement the assurance of his sincere gratitude.

Paris: The theme of the all but unanimous declaration of loyalty towards the Fuehrer and his policy by the whole German people outweighed all other topics in the French press yesterday, the Berlin correspondents of the leading Paris dailies describing, at great length the enthusiasm, which they declare "proves that the German people forms an indissolubly welded block with its Fuehrer."

The Echo de Paris declares that the course of the election was absolutely correct the only question now being what the Reich Government will do with these 44,000,000 supporters.

It is understood that & second election for the Municipal Council

of the International Set- tlement will be averted as a result of the decision of the American, British and Japanese communities to put forward only a suf- ficient number of candidates to fill the traditional allot- the ment of nine, in proportion of five-two-two, respectively.

The British and Ameri- can, communities are ex- pected to nominate the can- didates who were victori-: ous at the last election but it is uncertain which of the three Japanese will with- draw

The Japanese decision not to contest a third seat is ap- parently due to a desire to promote international good feeling, coupled with the real- isation that the non-Japanese voting strength is at present too strong to permit of a reversal of the original result However, "this does not signify that the Japeness will abandon the struggle for a greater representation in the administration, which will probably be revived next year. The choice of the two Japanese candidates is under- "stood ultimately to rest with Consul-Gezeral Ishii-Reuter.

London, To-day.

The Empire air services were criticised in the House of Commons on the second reading of the Air Navigation Bill, moved by Sir Phillip Sassoon, Under-Secretary of State for Air, providing "inter alia" for increased subsidies for, civil air transport from the present £1,000,000 a year to | £1,500,000 from December 31, 1940, until Decem-

Lt. Col. J. T. C Moore-Brabazon (C.. Wallasey), moving the rejection of the bill, declared that Empire civil aviation was no- thing to write home about,

Mrs. EL B. Tate (C, Frome), seconding the rejection, pointed out that Australia intended to take over the service from Singa- pore to Sydney with American machines.

INCREASE IN RAT

ELABORATE PRECAUTIONS BY AUTHORITIES

That there has been a great, increase in the rat population is borne out by that fact that dur- ing the year ended December 31, |1935, a total of 192,251 rats, of which 21.820 were taken alive, were collected and destroyed by the Sanitary authorities, as com- pared with 175,687 destroyed in the course of the year 1934. This shows an increase of 16,564.

Of the total number of rats 94,676, of which 14,938 were taken alive, were collected on the island, Major J. W. Hill (C.
