Leonard & Hachiuma Should Win

In a programme of seven matches this afternoon at the HKCC the most interesting -encounter appears to be that 'between P. H. Scoones" and A. L. Sullivan and J. W. Leonard and X. Hachimus.

NY other person with the strokes exploited by J. Tavares, and possessing the same knowledge of the game as" he did, would have beaten S. A. Rumjahn, the Colony Singles cham- pion, in the Second Round of the Championship at the H.K.C.C. yesterday. Tavares, however, lost by. 7-5, 1-6, 3-6 after breaking through the holder's service on three occasions in the final set!

Tavares, who has obviously learned a great deal as the result of his recent trip to Manila, was quite as well equipped as the champion and yet threw away a glorious opportunity of local fame overnight by gallery play, which lost him many valuable points and the match. His powerful service was in fine working. order in the opening set, but deteriorated later in the game.j. He, however, made the mistake of too often attempting to play a patient base-line game. Rumjahn is too experienced a player: to be treated in that manner, and he should have realised that he always did better when forcing the pace with his powerful top-spin forehand drive and good length drop shots on the back- hand. Spectators who saw him in action yesterday would not have believed that he lost to Warwick Shute in the First Round last year.

Rumjahn did not look as fresh- after the match as he might have done, and must have been relieved 10 find his opponent relying only. jon bis errors in the final set. He won the match on his splendid ex- hibition at the net, his remarkable for agility being responsible ¡several very unexpected points. His forehand shots had both pow jer and depth, but his backhand was inclined to be too much of a defensive stroke for a champion. Though he served only two dou-l

PLAYING very fast hockey, and employing short-passing tactics throughout the game, Portugal beat Wales by four goals to nil in thein local International hockey encounter at Sham- shuipo last evening.

It must not, however, be thought that Wales were out- played. On the other hand, they were very much in the picture and displayed flashes of brilliant hockey. They were, however, really unfortunate in running up against U. B. Souza, the Porta- guese custodian, when he was on his very best form. for this player saved more than one almost certain goal--one of them from point-blank range.

L. Oliveira, at centre-half for Portugal, was, however, the outstanding man on the field, and made many openings for his forwards. He was not once guilty of that fault so common to most pivots, that of being out of position.
