The sensational announcement that the French and Belgian Gov- ernments have decided to modify the Franco-Belgian Military Pact of 1920, was made by the Premier. M. Speaking of the situation caused by Germany's remilitarisation of the Rhineland, the Premier said that even a mutually agreed remili- tarisation would justify Belgium's compensation claims. M. Van Zee- land went on to say that Herr Hitler had made new proposals, which contained some very constructive ideas of the highest interest, but Belgium would stand by the Locarno Treaty until this was replaced by another pact.
