ENCOURAGEMENT FROM

KING GUSTAV

(By "FAIR FIELD")

London, January 23. Karl Schroeder, the young Swede, is winning more laurels on the lawn tennis court. Within two months he has defeated Vonj Cramm, Borotra and BoussKS, three "First Ten" men.

This record. Wallis Myers tells me, is meteoric, for Schroe- der had done virtually nothing in international tennis before the present covered-court sea-

son.

He owes much of his rise to the royal interest of King Gustav, himself a former doubles cham rion of Sweden and an active dia: ciple of the game, even in his 76th ycar.

It was the King's ambition that Schroeder should vindicate his talent at the Royal Club of Stock hin before his own countryınez, and it was-King, Gustav, I learn,! who invited Jean Barotra to head) the French team in the recent Swedish championship,

Chicago, February 3. Tyrus Raymond Cobb, fiery genins of the baseball diamond for 24 triumphant ́years, will be the No. 1 immortal in baseball's per- manent Hall of Fame. The famous Georgian, who shattered virtually all records known to baseball dur- ing his glorious era, won the dis- tinction as the immortal of im- mortals yesterday by outscoring even much diamond greats as Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner and Christy Mathewson in the nationwide pall to determine which 10 players of the modern age should be repre sented in the game's Memorial Hall at Cooperstown, N. Y.

Only Cobb, Ruth, Wagner, Mathewson and Walter John- son, probably the speed-ball king of them all, received the required majority to win places in the hall of fame, but Cobb was given a margin of seven votes over his closest rivals, Ruth and Wagner.
