JUBILEE BANQUET GERMANY V. ENGLAND ON MARCH 28
THRILLING STRUGGLE EXPECTED (By "Leighton")
London, January-26. THE jubilee banquet of the Hockey Association was a memorable function in the annals of the game and marked the arrival of the first fifty years of controlled hockey, although, of course, a game of hockey had been played in Asia for some thousands of years, as proved by the official history.
It was attended by many distinguished personalities, past and present. who had contributed their own quota, both ini administration and skill as players, to the great progress of the game. E. O. Pope, ore of the founders in 1836, was there while! another old-time ádministrator and player was R. Slade Lucas. who was the first cricketer to take an M.C.C. team to the West Indies. Then M. Merton Barker, a great half-back in the late 'eighties, was also a guest.

REFEREE CENSURED
BY CORONER "DISGRACE TO FIRST CLASS FOOTBALL” SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS MADE
(By Leighton ")
London, February 14. STRICTURES on the conduct of the Sunder- land vs. Chelsea match on February 1, which may have far-reaching repercussions, were-made by the Sunderland coroner, Mr. J. C. Morton, yes- terday at the inquest on James Thorpe, Sunder land's 22-year-old goalkeeper. Thorpe was in- jured in the second half of the match, but con- tinued to play. After the game he collapsed, and he died in hospital on February 5.
Mr. Morton said that one witness had described the game as a disgrace to first-class football "From what I have heard, I quite agree with him." It seemed to him when they got First Division football teams playing they expected to get the cream of sportsmanship and the best of play.
"We find players in first-class football who resort to methods that are far from what is desired, and they do not really help their clubs, or themselves, or the game. "If the referee had been where he should have been, watching the game, the continued ill-treatment to which the goalkeeper was subjected would not have been continued as long as it was-if the referee had done
his duty.
