BOXING SURPRISE
FARR BEATS LOUGHRAN AMID CHEERS AND BOOS
BUT WELSHMAN DESERVED WIN
(By Geoffrey Simpson)
London, January 17. TOMMY FARR, a 21-years-old Welshman who
was once a waiter and later a miner, brought| off one of boxing's greatest surprises at the Albert Hall, Kensington, last night.
He outpointed the veteran Philadelphian Tommy Loughran, ex-world cruiser-weight champion, with the Jim Driscoll left. thereby upsetting all the betting odds and all the predictions, but at the same time leaping to heavy-weight fame at a single bound..
Unhappily, not everybody could agree that this was an astonishing triumph for British boxing at the expense of one of the world's greatest stylists. When Mr. Wilfred Smith, the .referee, raised Farr's hand at the close of the tenth round there was a burst of cheering which was immediately followed by a chorus of booing.

Two Schools Of Thought That there were two schools of thought on this fight was obvious. Loughran, standing bolt apright, sending out his left and circling the ring artistically, won the favours of the majority. Farr, The Railway Recreation Club, less spectacular but exceptionally who have been participating in workmanlike, more aggressive and the Third Division for the past a harder puncher, deserved, in my two seasons, are now finding it opinion, to win what I thought hard to field a team each week was a close fight. and will in all probability not be Farr would not stand for such entering the Football League next treatment as Loughran meted out to Maurice Strickland recently.. WONDERFUL ATTACKING FORCE
To The Editor, “China Mär
SIR, The many letters which have appeared in the valuable columns of your newspaper suggesting very interesting teams from the Football Club, and the Chinese over a period of 25 years, has led me to butt in, if I may so use the expression, and place on record what I think is the very best team that Shanghai could have fielded at any one time during that same period and one which could have seen both or all the teams so far suggested, off the field.
When Arthur Hendrix (above),
- a law student of Lakeland, Florida, best Wilmer Allison at New Orleans, the tennis world woke up to the fact that a new star may be rising on the sport firmament. He is competing in the tournament at Miami.
Many will wonder why I have interfered in what appears to be a purely local subject, but Shanghai and Hong Kong have W. ALLISON always been very closely associated in soccer and there are many Shanghailanders in the Colony at present who would perhaps be
