THE CHINA MALE, FRIDAY, FERM
The Confession
(Continued from Page: 3.1
"Then, I turned my attention o to the bank-my mind was des perately open for any way to get some of the heaps of money that) passed through our hands. After weeks of this I had a plan. I had already asked for a transfer to one of their foreign banks, and in 2 month was to sail
"I had had considerable diff- culty in obtaining my parents consent to this great move, bat they could see that I was terribly restless. My plan was to wait until a matter of days before leave ing the bank, and then, on a late night when I knew that only three of us would be working, to creep suddenly upon each of the others and, with two quick sharp blows from a coal hammer, knock the two of them out. I would get off with a lot of money, hide it in a secret spot I had found in the neighbouring churchyard, and then rush with the alarm to the police station.
“I would swear I had seen two men, that I had rushed out after them as they had taken the money, but that one of them had tripped me up. When I got to my feet again and ran to the corner, the men had disappeared. All this was going to be plain-sailing, as I tried to think. With the, money I could buy a passage for my girl We would get married and begin new life in another country.” Denis Baker stirred in his seat, and the Chaplain, wiping his fore: head, looked at him.
›
"Did you mean to kill them out right?" the young man asked.
"Oh, no, no, caly to have stun- ned them, krocked them senseless while I got away with the money."
"Yes," said Baker: "That was all I meant to do, too. Go on, sir --what happened?"
"An opportunity did not occur as I had hoped," continued thr Chaplain. "There were too many of us working late together. The days drew nearer to my departure. and then one evening my girl told me that her mother had been ask- ing questions, said she was look- ing ill and wanted to take her to a doctor.
"I was almost dizzy with fear not for her, I am ashamed to say. -but fear that my people should find out, before I could get away.
"The day came at last. I said my good-byes at the bank, and then I went back to my landlady and I settled up with her. While. I was packing in my last few things my girl came to my room in an agony of mind because I was leaving her.
"I took her in my arms and fold her not to worry, that even yet I should have the money-in fact. I was expecting it directly I got home, and the poor credulous little soul believed me
"I had but four days to spend at home before my boat sailed We chang together in one close embrace and then I left her.
"I went to Brazil Letters from my girl were forwarded on to me. from-the-bank at home I did not answer them. She seemed so far away-what could I say? What! could I do? I left her, and that, my son, was my sin
"Some years later, when I was home on leave, I tried to find her
if she could only forgive me If would marry her, but I found no trace. All I could discover was that not very long after I left she and her mother had moved away. I made inquiries at a little sea- side town where I had known them to go for their summer holi- days, but everywhere I met with failure.
Then the whole thing began to prey on my mind, and at the end of another year-1- had“ made a change. I entered a training. cól- lege and eventually became what I am At times I feel I must scream from my pulpit what have done??
The Chaplain ceased speaking, and each for a while was occupied with his own thoughts. The young man looked steadily at the clergyman. Then, speaking very quietly, he said:
Thank you," sir, for telling your story, and I hope that will find it has eased your
confess.”
And as the Chaplain rose:
