MISSING FROM TEAMS

RESIDENTIAL QUALIFICATION QUESTION MAY BE ANSWER!

(ByReferee THE Interport-Football-Selection Committee have done a fairly good job in selecting two teams for the first trial next Sunday, although one is immediately impressed by the absence of any Second Division player, as there are many quite good enough.

It has invariably been the custom with the Hong Kong Foot- ball Association to select only players from the First Division, as these men are supposed to represent the cream of the Three Divisions, but what about Cheng Shui-hion, the Eastern leader, who formerly played for South China and who gave Hong Kong their only victory on Shanghai soil several seasons ago and Singleton, the prolific Third Division scorer, and they are only two among others.

It would be very interesting to see what really good talent could be unearthed from the junior teams, as I have seen several

VITAL TRY DISALLOWED

(By HOWARD MARSHALL)

MANY hopes went crashing down at Lans- downe-road on Saturday, when New Zealand beat Ireland by a goal, two penalty goals and two tries (17 points) to two penalty goals and a try (9 points).

Some of us suspected that New-Zealand-team work would be too much for Irish impetuosity, but at the back of our minds there was always the feeling that the Irish forwards might snatch a glorious victory.

Those forwards did their gallant best, without a doubt, and several times in the second half they sent New Zealand reeling back with smashing blows. At one period, indeed, New Zealand Hed by only eleven points to nine, but Ireland could not produce

the final scoring thrust.

It was the old story of the,

fighter, and with sundry feints THE STEADY jand counters and straight lefts the boxer escaped the knock-out punch, and won-handsomely ont points. A fine performance by New Zealand, and the sincerity lof our congratulations is at the Isame time a measure of our

respect for their opponents.

The Missing Referee Here one must interpolate a note on the strange affair of the missing referee, which sounds like an entry in Sherlock Holmes' case-book.
