MEEKE AND WARREN SHINE

ASCRAPPY, but exciting rugby match was witnessed on the Club ground yesterday when HMS. Medway beat the Club “A” fifteen by a goal and a try (8 points) to two tries (6) points), the outstanding feature being the excel- lent work of Meeke at the base of the Club scrum.

The game, however, was marred by a serious injury to Supply Petty Officer Watts, who sustained a clean fracture of the shin- bone just above the ankle when he attempted to kick the ball at the same time as an opposing player. He was taken to the Royal Naval Hospital by Mr. W. O'Neill

Both sides commenced short, and the Navy, packing six forwards, held the Club eight until they were reinforced by two other men. It was then that they opened the scoring through Warren, who played a fine game throughout.

CENTURY by Sam Kermani and good bowl- ing by Pat Madar were responsible for Shanghai beating the Kowloon Cricket Club by 98 runs at the KC.C. yesterday in a game that produced 444 runs for the loss of 17 wickets in 257 minutes!

Donald Leach took the game very light-heartedly, opening- the batting with the tail-enders and opening his attack with the fast but erratic" "Camera” Williams and E. C. Baker, "the mana- ger of the side. Despite this surprise move, however, an in- teresting day's cricket resulted.

Kermani's 115, scored out of 234 in 121 minutes, was not a chanceless. knock-he should have been taken by Hung on the boundary before he had scored 20 runs-though it was a very fine forcing innings. Included in his best hits were three sixes off Frank Goodwin and 15 boundaries. His book shot and late- cut were again very much in evidence. Pat Madar, though the wicket was a little too fast for him, secured 5 for 43 after taking his last four wickets for 19- runs.

Arthur Lay, who handled a bat for the first time this season, was the only KCC batsman to show any degree of confidence against the mediocre Shanghai attack After playing himself in against Williams and Baker be proceeded to help himself to 71 runs, scored out of 111, in 68 minutes, hitting a five (all, run) chanceless display, keeping the ball along the carpet for the majority of his runs.
