was maddening. There were be engineered, rivals to be downed, money to be made. He saw chances in plenty. Let him loom with a tomahawk' in the mar“ ket and he'd be collecting scalps Hike billy-oh. But he was tied to this rotten bed. Curse Liplein! And

more--carse Briggs! Why hadn't the oaf been on the alert to take the gun from Liplein?| Yes, it had all been Briggs' fault.} He hoped that the fe or world! never get another job, and that he and all his family would have to make a bee-line for the work- house.

Curse this pain! How could a man concentrate on big problems of finance when every other minute; came an agonising twinge to re- mind him of the vast quantity of small shot, he had taken into his; system?

Mr. Carboy changed over to hir

· other side, and made a solemn Tow that never again would be risk his precious and well-partured frame on a partridge most.

What

fool he a

had been! Draped with a couple of rashers of bacon, a partridge was a tasty! dish. But let other people do the shooting of them. Why had he

wanted to do it? It had never occurred to him to kill a cow in order to get a tenderloin steak. No more than it had to trawl for his own sole or oysters. To think; that he had put himself in a posi- tion where he was open to be pep- pered with gun-shot! He must have gone off his head. Nerer never again!

In the meantime the news of Mr. Carboy's mishap and his subae- quent confinement to bed had be-, come known in the City and had aroused much interest and sym- pathy. Everybody realised what a blow it must have been to the financier. Not only had he to suf- fer the pain of having the pellets extracted-possibly with a pair of tweezers--but he was condemned to inaction at a time when stocks! and shares were unusually active.

Now it is unjust to say, as is often done, that dealers in stocks, and shares are just so many money-making machines. All who know the City well realise that the heart of the financier is generally in the right place.

Thus, in discussing Mr. Carboy's woes, one or two men made re- ference to a subscription list, and the idea of a presentation took shape. The meeting to carry the thing through was held at a well-known City hotel.

The chair was taken by a Mr. Lionel Perkins, who was a pro- miment operator in many branches of finance.

"Gentlemen," said he, "i need: not tell you how deeply. I sympath- ise with our old friend, Felix Car-| boy, in his affiction. It's all very well for a partridge to receive 2 dose of small shot in its frame It is used to it. That's its job. But for a man so well known in the City it's quite a different thing. I'm sure poor Carboy feels his position acutely. He will never again be his bright and merry zelf until he can sit up to a table for his meals in the ordinary “WHY.,

"I have known him for ten years. I well record his operations in regard to the River Oro Syndi

Very adroitly he bribed the local engineer in Ecuador to send a report showing that the lode contained gold in very paying quantities. On the strength of this, I bought 1,000 shares at nine-and- ziz. When the showdown came 1 "was lucky to get out with a loss of seven shillings a sharem

cate.

That's the Felix Carboy who has brought us all here to-day. I have, therefore, great pleasure in opening the subscription list with cheque for one hundred pounds.” Loud applause greeted this speech, and then a Mr. Barr Lewis

"I desire," he announced, associate myself most heart with all that our worthy Chair: has just said. I remember on one

receiving a single grai

shot in my forearm, have not forgotten how painful

to think of a TED whole
