The fifth anniversary of the Emperor's ac cession to the throne was celebrated with great pomp, beginning on Saturday night with a grand military parade, the majority of the 12,000 sol- diers taking part being armed with spears and lances. As they filed past the Emperor to the sound of military drums they shouted in chorus: "Give us rifles.”

The Emperor and Empress drove through the gaily beflagged streets early yesterday morning to attend divine service at St. George's Church, where they were crowned in 1930. The festi- CONTINUED ities culminated in a banquet in front of the palace, where the

Shanghai, To-day.

While some foreign bankers are prepared to turn over their silver resources to the Chinese Government, this is by no means "unanimous, many feeling that they are entitled to secure the London silver price for their holdings.

The opinion is expressed that outstanding contracts of ex- change can be taken up at rates previously arranged, but the banks' depositors will have to accept notes for payments in the future instead of silver dollars.

An interesting point is what will happen to the note issues of the foreign banks, for which full silver reserves are held local- ly. An embargo on the expart of silver is believed likely if for-- eign bankers and others do not agree to abide by the Govern- ment's decision regarding the nationalisation of silver Beater.
