HALVES ARE TEAM FUNDATION
London, September 28.
SUPPOSE that, as things stand at the moment, if one side seems more likely to beat the All Blacks than another it is Scotland. It is true they are not the champions-in fact, they were beaten last year by Wales as well as Ireland, and only narrowly beat England.
But Scotland last year were a young side, and they were building for the future. They gladly wrote off their defeats against experience. Then it was not until the Calcutta Cup Match that they discovered the true value of B. W. Shaw as a stand-off half, and Shaw and W. R. Logan as a combination.
It looks, in fact, as though the Scottish side, barring unfore seen changes of fortune, so far as the vital positions are con cerned, is almost there for the picking.
The half-backs are the true foundation of any team, and ne one need look beyond Shaw and Logan. At centre, young W. C. W. Murdoch made an auspicious start against England last March, and R. C. S. Dick, whom Scotland, in the absence of an outstanding rival wisely refused to drop last season although hej ~ was not quite at his best, is said to be approaching his form of

FAST and exciting rugby game was witness-
ed on the Club ground yesterday when the Army "A" fifteen beat the Club “A” fifteen by two goals and two tries (16 points) to three tries (9 points), after being led at the interval by 6 points to 3.
The Army fielded an exceptionally strong fifteen, including several of last Saturday's stars, and the manner the Club for wards, halves and threes held the Army prior to the interval was indeed most praiseworthy.
Bodnar was again outstanding among the Club backs, while Archer, Hynes and Powell all shone intermittently. Hynes never played a better game and his two tries, the second and third, were the result of following up and a dashing display.
The Club forwards played a
