THIS study of the last royal family of France and of those. Twho planned and worked for their escape. Varennes, the Flight of Louis XVI" by Cesare Giardini, translated by Una Lady Troubridge, is so stirring a drama that one reads it with unrelaxed interest from beginning to end.

The book is pub- ished by Thornton Butterworth. How difficult it is to believe that the story is one of real life and not fiction over which we may sigh and shrug our shoulders, wondering why the author did not give us a little more happiness to share in the lives of his creations! No, here we deal with living characters at the mercy of the mob-that mob, oppressed for. centuries, now ris- ing in tumult. We feel the force of this mass of suffering people come nearer and nearer like a tremendous wave growing more powerful as it moves.

The wave ever threatens to Antoinette that stands out most break over the Tuileries: in vividly in these pares.
