Eousewife is confronted
with small but annoying pro- blems arising out of some real or supposed architectural de- fect of the house. Sometimes too many doors or awkward cor- ners make the arrangement of furniture difficult, or the plan of the house may make it al most impossible to adapt it to the particular needs of the Jamily. Often the solution is at hand but is rejected on the grounds of its expense. In this article I am offering a few sola- tions to some frequently oc curring difficulties.
Alcoves And Window
Spaces
In many of the older houses bed- rooms were planned with an ai- cove. I suppose the original idea was to provide a more seclud ed spot for the bed.
House- wives usually despise these alcoves because they break up the tinity of the room and com- plicate furnishing problems. The problem becomes the more acute in cases where the bed- room must be adapted to more modern furnishing scheme,
or when the

bedroom becomes superfluous could be better used for some other purpose. The accompanying illus trations show the solution to three sach problems. The pictures tell the whole story and it is not neces- sary to add much more.
The first picture shows an alcove furnished in the modern manner. Originally there was space in the alcove for two single beds. In the new scheme the two single beds have been replaced by one large built-in double bed. In the space gained a wardrobe and linen cabinet. are built in, while a portion of the linen cabinet above the headboard of the bed is used for bookshelves. The reading light boxed in on the lowest shelf, is placed behind a ground-glass slab. A. silk mosaic picture over the bed completes the decorations.
The second sketch shows the al- cove of a former bedroom trans- formed into a living room study.- The alcove contains a window, around which a space of about five feet six inches square has been furnished with a built-in, desk and bench. On either side the remain- der of the alcove is fitted with book- shelves. The superfluous depth of
