Hints From Best- Dressed Woman

K

AY-FRANCIS has been des

scribed

"Best- as the Dressed Woman in the World" and she certainly talks like a dress expert. You might like to hear some of her advice. During a receat visit to Lon- don she was interviewed again and 'agai and here's a little or what she said.

I like black because there's nothing to touch it for day clothes. I like white because it's far and away the most becoming colour for evening wears and green, because my eyes are green.”

Red was casually mentioned, but Miss Francis looked horrified

"Red? Never. I have a theory about red If you walk into a room in a red frock, the next time you walk into that room you're a marked woman. No, red can, and should, only be worn by women who

possess a frock a minute. Remember that"

"What do you wear in the morn- ings was asked.

what I "More often than not West in the

she afternoons," laughed. I think it's only novels that make a distinction between twelve and four. Mind you I don't only wear frocks. I wear suits a lot. Their line's perfect for gawky me!"

"What is your line?"

"Simplicity every time. Simpli- city for morning, afternoon, and evening. Can you imagine. me in frills and ruffles? I'd look ridien- jou

This is one of her favourite out- .fits: On her head a black bat-

rather like "The Laughing Cavalier's," pulled down on the right, and turned up on the left, with a feather stuck gaily through. the crown On her willowly figure a black, pale and dark green striped model with wing-like shoulders and а draped front. With this she wears jewellery worth notė. At her throat a jade brooch surrounded with diamonds, and on her left hand a ring of the- same type-a large jade acorn banded with diamonds. But the bracelet is perhaps the most in- teresting of all, for it carries out the colour scheme of the frock; just rows of beads shading from pale to dark green.

On her last visit to Paris she bought two. day dresses--both black crepe and very simple; one with a belt of white cord, and the other with a collar of silver tissue; alyp sports dress in white linen tweed with a coat of brown crash to wear with it.

And what does Miss Francis think of bare legs?

"They ought to be banned." she. exclaims firmly, "except on the beach and on the courts."

If the nails are ribbed or are not quite so smooth as they should be. a pearl finished lacquer will help to disguise minor imperfections.

"Massage rather surprisingly, comes after the nails are completely finished, the reason being that any grease on the mails prevents the var nish adhering. Even the cuticles are oiled after the lacquer has been applied. A good tip, this, to re- member when manicuring or ped guring at home.

With long firm movements, the pedicurist massages a cream along the ankles, under the feet, between the toes Then she presses back the arch of the foot. rotates the toes, stretches the toes. If desired, a whitening greaseless cream can be applied; no powder is needed over this cream and it wil keep the feet and ankles cool, and blanched throughout the evening. ·

lighting technicians and directors to present the star favourably from "every angle. She might have little

wrinkles round her mouth like a Katherine Hepburn, or a freckled face Eke Janet Gaynor. Some of these little imperfections show only from certain ancies, so as far as possible those angles, are avoided. But the main helps in photographie presentation are make-up and light- inga

The make-up is quite different from that of the stage; in substance is much thicker and in colour a brilliant, pale yellow which reflects the light. No red is used on the cheeks as this photographs dark. Strong and diffused Bghting ets out those shadows which cause wrinkles to be seen,

It is impossible in this short space i to describe the thousand resources of the cinema technique which are utilised to make our stars look as they do in the pictures, and these resources are by no means always adequate. Some faces present a special problem, and then trouble and tears begin on the set. The problem is never really solved, as the star's face changes with the years and that means constant watching and worring from which no star is freemexcept perhaps Mickey Mouse!

The feet are soaked in warm soapy water, dried on a soft towel. and the nails clipped and filed. No fancy work, unless an oval or point is insisted upon by the client, for the pedicurist will tell you that such frivolities are best kept for the 11:13:51:3331;}}:11:33:131113 finger-nails.

Your toes are then wrapped up in separate jackets of cotton-wool soaked in cuticle lotion and are left in this comfortable state while the nails of the cther foot are attended to. Dead cuticle is then removed and acid deposits scraped away.

Care of the Nails

The nails are filed again and scrubbed with a little round, brush and warm soapy water; cotton-wool wads are twisted between each toe
