have them. Small boys do lend themselves too easily to fancy dress, and the effect of many a bridal cortege has been spoilt by a ruckled-looking page.

And here is a useful word of advice about your bridesmaids. For obvious reasons one cannot always choose', one's bridesmaids for their looks alone, bat if there' is a plain relation who must be included, devote your efforts to choosing an outft that will give her a chance to look her best, and let the more attractive members of the retinue fall into line. Your best looking bridesmaid wil prob- ably look ravishing in any case.

Gray, by the way, is the last colour for the bridal retinue.

HOW SOME WEDDING CUSTOMS BEGAN

(Continued)

only bad luck could attend the match. The reason was that it was well known that no witch couli shed more than three tears, and those from the left eye only: therefore a very profuse display of tears proved that the bride was under no agreement with Satan and that all would be well with the marriage..

Throwing Of Rice Throwing rice is an Indian can- tomi; it has given place to con- fetti in recent yars only because the little scraps of paper are less painful missiles than grains of rice, and modera civilied wedding guests are more merciful to their victims than they used to be Thus newly-married couples are subjected now only to discomfort and embarrassment produced by thoroughly searching showers of confetti, whereas our parents were made to suffer not only discomfort bat pain and disfigurement as well from the hard grains of rice fung at them by their friends to wish them luck

The Marriage Knot

The symbolical marriage-knot of which we hear is actually part of the Hindu ceremony too. In this. the bridegroom hangs a ribbon.. round the bride's neck and ties it in a knot, upon which the marriage immediately becomes indissoluble. Cariously enough, the Latin cere- meny included the unloosening of a knot in the bride's girdle in place of the tying of one.

MAINBOCHER'S tulle bridal veil is short, pink, and hooded, scorn over, à trainless pink getryette dress girdled with hydrangeas.

Long sleeves are almost univer- sally worn to-day, but this effect can easily be achieved by wearing a coatee as part of the wedding goun

No colour is taboo for a wedding gown to-day, provided it is pale enonghi, oyster, pink, peach, ice- blue, or even green are all permis- sible as long as they are the palest possible shades of the colour.

The new materials too offer an amazing variety of choice, but, satin still holds its own for the classical style of Town while taffetas, faille, corded silk or moire can be used if the fuller style is chosen White moire. is almost unbelievably lovely for the bouffant style of wedding dress, and a re- cent fashionable bride created quite a sensation in a very full dress and train of this material in which dozens of yards must have been used.

Perhaps

the mos effective material for the petite bride is white tulle and a charming idea for a tulle wedding is to have the bridesmaids frocks made in the same styles as that of the brice but each ima different colour. But you meet`make up your mind beforehand that a rulle-dressed re- tinue is frankh extravagant idea, for, apart from the fraility of

the material, you require an incre- dible amount of tulle for such a frock to be effective.

The same point should be borne in mind if you are wearing a talle veil and this by the way is far more becoming than lace, lovely as that is. It is nearly always better to use the family lace to make the train to your frock, and to have your veil a cloud of tulle. but don't hem the edges.

time

There has never been when the bride has had so many fascinating styles of headdress from which to choose. No- longer Is she restricted to the wreath or Juliet cap, but she can wear any- thing from a tulle halo to a pearin bonnet

The very latest idea is to dis- pense with the bouquet and wear instead a cluster of camellias or orange blossom in the corsage of your wedding gown, but only the girl who is confident of being able to manage her hands should actempt this A bouquet is a great help to nervous bride. Elaborate bouquets are in any case out of datejust a few. petiers blooms are all that fashion de mands.

Neither are large retinnes fashionable to-day. Except for sisters or an intimate friend OF
