Cleaning Process
Last year's straw hat will he much improved if it is cleaned when it is taken out of store. Only stiff straws should be damped, soft or delicate straws being cleared with stale breadcrumbs or powered magnesia White straw hats can advantageously be sponged with warm, soapy water, and then with clear water to which vinegar has been added. Coloured straws are improved by being rubbed with methylated spirit. Some of the coarser straws can be freshened by
being rubbed with a few drops
of olive oil. Whenever hats are damped they should be pulled into their original shape and dried as quickly as possible in a warm place.
