KATHERINE RAWLS OF MIAMI BEACH

OLYMPIC PROSPECTS OUTLINED LITTLE Katherine Rawls, of Miami, is the best all-round swimmer of her sex in the world writes Mr. W. J. Howcroft in a London daily.

At the U.S.A. Women's Championships held in a 25 yards bath at Chicago, she won the 100 yds. free-style in 63 sec, the 300 yds. medley in 4 min. 9 6-10 sec. (breaking her own world's re- cord), the 100 yds. breast-stroke in 1 min. 20′ 6-10 | sec, and finished third in the 220 yds. free-style to Leonore Kight, who won in 2 min. 35 5-10 sec. Later, Miss Kight took the 500 yds. în 6 min. 21 9-10 sec. Under a new rule, competitors are restricted to four events so Miss Rawls decided not-to defend her springboard diving title.

OLD friends of mine and of yours are here

again. Three summers running you have seen four friendly Australian invaders - Jack Crawford, Vivian McGrath, Adrian Quist and Don Turnbull; to me the season now begun will be the fifth consecutive one in their company, for I have been lucky enough to sandwich in two tours in their land.

It is less than three months since we said good-bye to each other in Melbourne. I am get- ting to know them rather well on and off the court.

I mentioned them briefly in a previous article. As they and the Americans are likely to be our most dangerous opponents at Wimbledon and in the Davis Cup contest they demand fuller refer-
