Your DIET

PROTECT YOUR TEETH BY SUPPLYING THÊM WITH THEIR DAILY NEEDS THY do so many children «

Did Nature intend that childreï should grow up with their mouths filled with cleverly con- structed porcelain filings and unsightly bridge-work? Not in the least. Dentistry is a "civilised” profession which has come to be necessary be cause of our dietetic sins.

W have poor teeth?

So many mothers make the mis- take of paying little or no atten- tion to the child's first teeth. be- lieving they are not important be cause they will come out in a few

That in one reason why children so often have poor per- manent teeth. It was thought at first that some mischievous gern was responsible for tooth-troublez Our children were taught to ejende and scrub continuously - yet the dentist was kept busy. In the last few years 'science has found a new approach to the problem. "It has been discovered, as the result of experiments, that since the teeth are just another part of the body, they are dependent on the food we est

In the Sheffield Hospital, 835 children, ranging from two to six- teen years, were divided into three groups. The first group received. in addition to the regular diet, an additional amount of vitamins A and D in the form of cod liver all: the second group treacle, the third group olive oil, which is in reality pare fat, and then olive oil to which radiosterol (an irradiated fat) had been added. The treat- ment was carried out for a period over two years. At the end of this time it was found that the children in the first group, who had plentiful supply of vitamins A and D, had developed very few cavities in their teeth, and that the small number of cavities that had ap peared were easily and almost painlessly treated. The children in the second and third groups. however, had 'on the average three times as many cavities as those in the first grous, and of these cavi- ties only one third were of the - small, or "harmless" type.

*

It has further been proved that the progress of cavities is arrest- ed by feeding children on adequate amounts of citrus fruit juice. It is also found that orange and lemon juice contain elements; which act As a growth stimulus to children..

The path from first teeth to false teeth is an unbroken one-it starts even before the baby is born. Iz childhood the mother can protect her children's teeth by including în his meals sufficient quantities of cod liver oil, lemon and orange, juice

In light of these experiments iz seems that vitamins A and D make. the best dentists, since they not only delay decay, but also prevent it and actually aid in the growth of a healthy dentine inside the enamel. Once more diet proves it- self to be all-important in building a strong body, and to the well- known saying that "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" can be add- ed another line "And an apple at night makes the dental bill light."
