Introducing ...
A Delightful Possibility
W discoveries as to the
NEW
effect of light on colour are being discovered almost daily And this may soon do- some most novel and interest- iny things to women's gowns. Here's bou- the idea came about:
The American artist, Charles Bittinger, would take months 20 make his paintings. Part of the time he worked in the dark. He...... would brush on paint by ordinary light, then switch off the lamps. and turn on ultra-violet rays to see whether he had achieved his effect He returned from the war with new ideas about vision and colour. From his work came a system of deceiving the commanders of Ger- man submarines. By a series of irregular patterns of light and xhade and contrasting colours. cargo carriers were nade to look 14. a periscope like reefs, and bars. masses of drifting seaweed.
Bittinger proceeded to apply tha principle with astonishing results. By skilful dyeing of custumes and the ingenious use of scientific cos- metics and of changing foot and spot lights he transformed dazzling white chorus girls first into a liv ing kaleidoscope and then into a row of black-faced dancers clad in black and white, with red lipa and popping eyeR.
Applying the same principle to paintings, Bittinger has created what may well be regarded as a new form of art.
His masterpiece of illusion Lisa," is perhaps his "Mona Viewed by ordinary light it is merely a nightmare of colour con- trasts that bear no resemblance to anything on earth. Hold up a red glass, the famous "Mona Lisa"""
stands out...
Bittinger is sure that when pub- lishers and artists realise the pas- sibilities of science applied to colour, advertising will receive a new 'impetus. Brightly coloured electric signs can be one thing by day, another by night
But what interests us is the fact. that women's gowns may be made to have one aspect at an afternoon tea on the lawn and another in- doors; one in ordinary. light in- doors, another in sunlight, another in electric light. We shall be birds of both the night and the day in the self-same gown!

Women And Intelligence
(Continued)
Let us consider this masculine domination. Does it vary, very inuch since the beginning of his- tery In its form yes, but in its profound sense it is always the same. Before Jesus Christ there was Periclea. Not being able. no drebt, to console himself for mate rying Aspasia, he says:"
“Which is the-best-woman-The- one of which one talks the least ***Many men, it would seem, are still of this opinion. After thirteen centuries of Christianity the jurist Pierre de NavaITËS.
sures us:
"A woman should not learn to read or write, if not for the pur- pose of becoming a muri. Through reading and writing woman mest go wrong.
In all the masculine appreciation. one finds again and again the same leit motif, the same words: neccle, bousehold, children..
Napoleon, when putting Madame Campan at the head of the odea- tion institution of the Legion of Hanout, recommended her:
"Make mothers for us."*) * "Oh Sire, but why should those mothers. be forcibly ignorant?”
To others we are only degraded beings, simply committed to house bold tasks and care of children.:
Perhaps in times of antiquity one finds something more consol- .ing.. One finds everything in this blessed epoch. For instance, in the Egypt of the Pharaohs, the women are not content to be advocates or doctors. There is mention of ose who became sub-governor of province, later, a prefect, and fimal- ly "Commandant of the Gates of
last the
title Occident." This seems to me the most magnifcent. It humiliates all our little admin- istrative titles.
In Eome the woman knew what she wanted and in the wedding. service she declared: ...
"Where you are master, there I' shall be mistress.”

The education of women up to: the eighteenth century is mainly ecclesiastical, but towards the end of that period things begin change. Not that more opportun- ity was given, but women began to instruct themselves. In 1810 a young professor of the Sorbonne causes a scandal by admitting wo- men to his classes. Times have changed, but what tenacity the woman needed to prove that she has the right to the manifesta- tions of her intelligence. And bow much further, it seems, she must still travel before this right be- comes universally recognised!
