Harrowing Voyage On China Coast
ONE DEAD AND ANOTHER BLINDED
A nightmare voyage down the Chinese coast in a steamer full of escaped tarantulas, during which many of the native crew went mad and European passengers locked | themselves in their cabins without food and drink for days, is de- scribed by Mr. Ragnar Nyberg, a Swedish Mercantile Marine officer, who recently returned to his native country after fifteen years, serviçe in Chinese coasting vessela.
It was during a voyage from Newchwang to Shanghat that be encountered the dreaded spiders. The vessel carried a mixed cargo which included evil-smelling soya bean cakes, and among the pas songers were 200 Chinese recruits who had enlisted in the French Army.
