4.60. The consulting engineers who had previously submitted a report on suitable methods of sewage disposal in the Northern New Territories, namely Yuen Long, Fanling/Shek Wu Hui, Tai Po and Sha Tin, submitted a supplementary report based on revised forecast population figures for these areas.

4.61. Investigations to ascertain the degree of pollution in streams in the New Territories were continued and float tests and probes of the sea bed were taken in the vicinity of Pillar Island to determine the most suitable line for the Tsuen Wan and Kwai Chung sewer submarine outfall.

4.62. Preliminary investigations and design were carried out for the Shing Mun River Flood Control Scheme and excavation works on Stage I, Phase I, of the Scheme were substantially completed in areas where no land resumption was involved.

Trenches

4.63. Development by Utilities continued unabated but close co-operation by all concerned ensured that there was a minimum of interference with traffic.

Resettlement and Low Cost Housing Estates

4.64. Extensive road and drainage works were carried out in a number of estates mainly in Eastern Kowloon, Kwai Chung in the New Territories and the Aberdeen area of Hong Kong Island.

Private Works

4.65. A great deal of drainage connexion works for building development was undertaken and a total of 645 demand notes were issued for the purpose.

Quarry Section

4.66. The production of crushed granite aggregate, primarily for the manufacture of road surfacing materials, continued at the two Government Quarries.

4.67. At Mt. Butler Quarry mechanization of quarry operations was sufficiently advanced to obviate the need for stone breaking and loading by hand.
