Finance has decided to extend the business tax throughout the pro- vince, particularly to eities and ports such as Swatow, Pakhol and Holhow. Hitherto the collection of this tax has been confined to shops and firms in 'Canton.

The amount of tax payable is generally one or two aer cent, of the registered capital of the firm. of There are also other ways figuring the amount, such as the volume of business done or profils made during the year. Small shops are exempted from payment.
