Travellers in the deserts of Asia and Africa have told re- markable stories about the sing- ing of the sands as they walked over them
When they are walking down the slopes of sandhills a definitely musical note is given out in many places, varying in sound according to the district: Some times it is like the sighing of the wind; at other times it is like a drum, or even a peal of bells, and at still other times like the brass lor stringed instruments of an
orchestra or band.
What causes the singing of the sarids? It is believed to be due te the grains of sand beneath the surface rubbing against one another, as they are moved by the pressure of the foot above. The friction is often increased by a thin coating of salt outside the grains, which acts, like the resin on a violin bow. The friction of the grains sets up vibrations in the air, which travel up and pass out Into the open atmosphere,
