A wave of murder and sudden death appears to have touched South Africa at Christmastide. Besides several murders involving coloured peo- ple, tragedies among the the whites are reported from various centres.
The body of Gertruida Dewaal, an elderly teacher at a local school, was found in the school-room on Boxing Day apparently strangled with her own stockings, while a man named Dutoit, the caretaker, of the school, was lying dead in the basement with a bullet wound in the heart. A revolver was lying nearby.
