REPUTATION NO CRITERION

(By LEWIS STOKER) (Birmingham's International "Half-Back)

To gain your place in a football team is usual- ly less difficult than keeping that place after- wards. This applies as much to the local player as to the professional in the League game.

To play regularly for any kind of team you must maintain a required standard of talent. This standard naturally varies according to the grade of football in which you play. But no man in any department of the game can slack persis- tently, neglect training and practice, and keep his place.

Even the greatest exponent of football cannot afford to as sume that, just because he has a Cup winner's medal or an in- ternation cap, he will always be assured of employment in the League game. He must be continuously “polishing up” his foot- ball methods. He must keep fit, and train as conscientiously as any youngster in search of fame.

The plain fact of the matter is, responsibility to see that the game. of course, that without coaching is opened out properly. and training, talented footballers An open, fast-moving game is ex- would never appear in the League hilarating to play and fascinating or amateur camps.
