JOHN E. LOVELOCK'S great mile race with William R. Bonthron of

the United States; G. L. Rampling's British recard quarter-mile Second Division:- in 48., and J. P. Metcalfe' 51ft. 3in. for the hop, step and jump, are events which stand out clearly in a restrospect of the 1934 Bris tish track and field athletic season.

Lovelock's content with Bonthron in the Oxford-Cambridge versus Princeton-Comell match, on July 21, was a race which excited more public interest than any since the days of the Lord Burghley- Luigi Facelli hurdling duels.

The general public, which in Britain is not particularly in terested in track happenings, discussed the event for days before- hand, because the newspapers played it up.

No record was set up such a thing was hardly expected by those who knew how the track had been affected by a drought and a rodeo-and Lovelock, the superior tactician, won" in 4 m. 14.4 &

Early last year a Continental sports writer created a good deal of discussion by ranking national football teams according to his own estimation. In his "super" class he gave first place to Austria, and second place to Scotland, with England and Italy third and fourth respectively.
