WOMAN CONVICTED FOR VAGRANCY
Would Not Pay Her Hotel Bill
BECAUSE SHE WAS HAUNTED BY "SOMETHING"-
That she had been continuously haunted by people during the last cight years in England, Australia. Singapore, and Hong Kong, was revealed by Miss Florence Helen Stratford, 40-year-old native England, who was charged with Being a vagrant in the Colony be- Lore Mr. W. Schofield at the Cen- tral Magistraty yesterday after
noon.
Mr. A. K. Damond, manager of the Peninsula Hotel, was the last witness called yesterday to give evidence. Mr. Diamond said that defendant registeret at the Penin- Aula Hotel on June 18 and that she came from Australia with a letter of introduction from a firm in Brisbane.
A formal letter requesting her to neel her account was sent to her by the Hotel management on July 16. Mr. Diamond said that she re- plied by telephone. He then went to Miss Stratford in her room with

n clerk. He said that Miss Strat- ford said that she did not wish to pay her account, though she admitted that had money at the time. When asked why she did not want to pay, she replied that something was haunting her and that she wanted to get to the bottom of it.' Mr. Diamond then said that she main- tained this attitude throughout her stay at the Hotel, and on July 19 instructions were given to look her| room after she left. The bill amounted to $255.40.
Mr. Schofield' suggested that she be detained at the Government Civil Hospital temporarily, but Sergeant Mottram then said that hospital authorities did not consider Miss Stratford as a patient any longer. "The only place for such case la the House of Detention," he said.

Mr. Schofield added that the question whelber she is to be given an op- portrinity to look for work here, or whether she is to he sent away. was for the Government to decide. Through the courtesy of Dr. J. H. Montgomery, occasional con- ducted tours of the Operating Theatre, Matilda Hospital, are available to members. There' will be one on Sunday, 18th November at 11.30 a.m. and members desirous of attending should be at the Bos pital at that hour.
