THE

defeat in the first round of Miss Joyce Wethered and her partner, Raymond Oppenheimer, overshadowed all else in the Wor- plesdon mixed foursomes, which began yesterday.

Their downfall was brought about by Miss Phyllis Wade, of Ferndown, near Bournemouth, who recently won the English championship, and G. C. Brooks, of Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset.

Brooks, who is a dental surgeon and plays off plus 1, has been champion of Gloucestershire
