An R.A:F. officer was drowned and an N.C.O. severely injured when a Fleet Air Arm aeroplane was damaged in landing on the deck of the aircraft-carrier Courageous near here recently (and plunged into the sea.
The dead officer was Flying Officer Leonard Nicholas Elaner, of No. 810- Fleet Torpedo-Bomber Squadron, pilot of the machine, whose home was at, Newbiggin, near Richmond, Yorkshire..
The injured N.G.O. is Sergeant Harry Brett Bexley, Flying-Officer - Elsner's passenger, whose home la ut Gillingham, Kent.
The accident occurred at the mouth of the Firth of Forth, when the Courageous was returning to
the Forth after exercises at Inver gordon.
The machine, a Baffin, containing Flying Officer Elaner and Sergt. Bexley, was one of a number which were rejoining the aircraft carrier from Leuchars.
