While the German university lecture assumes that the student knows the main literature about the subject, the Oxford lecture does not give him more than what he can find in the books, and is more an introduction to the art of reading them. There are, of

exceptions. But on course, whole one can say that the stand- Jard of the Oxford lecture' is below

that of a German university lec-! ture. It must be, because it is given for a different purpose.

the

Besides the lectures there are the tutoriala. Tutorials for groups of six or eight pupils remind the Continental student of his school, while the smaller groups very often recall the memory of seminars or private conversations with the professors of his univer- Bity.

There are those tutorials in which, ¡year after year, the same ques- tions are asked, the same answers are given, and the pupils discreetly look at their watches AB they did at school; and there are those in which teacher and pupils leave the trodden path and wander to distant problems and to real re- search.

A great difference between the German university and Oxford is that the German student has got to find his way to his teacher. There is nobody' who 'supervises jhim or who puts him on the right track. In Oxford he is immediate- |ly taken care of by the senior members. It then depends on himself whether he will establish closer contact with the "school" or with the university," and when he will change from the one to the other.

Union Debates

A question which foreigners very often put is: "Do the under- graduates at Oxford really work?” The answer to this is undoubted- ly in the affirmative. As at all other universities in the world, the first months are spent, not so much in working as with acclimatisation and often amusement. But after that time the undergraduate usual.

The average amount of work done by the individual student in Oxford is certainly below that of the German universities, and also of some French ones, but that does not mean that it is not a high aver- {age.

War between Russia and Japan was again threatened in the crisis arising from the arrest. 88 Soviet citizens employed by the Chinese Eastern Railway by au orities of Manchukuo, the Japanese puppet- state, on charges of sabdage. The arrests followed the failure of M. Constantin Yurenef (left), Soviet Ambassador to Tokyo, and Mr. Koki Iirotz (right), Japanese Foreign Minister, to agree upon the terms of the proposed sale of the Russian interest in the railway to the Manchukooan government.
