RECORD ALPINE
CAR TRIAL
MANY WOMEN IN BIG BRITISH ENTRY
Mountain Road Epic Promised
ROAD LIKE ROUGH STEPS
London, August, 11. Fully half the British competi tors in the International Alpine Trial, which starts from Nice next Monday, have already left for the Continent and are now
on their way south.
This year, in spite of gloomy prophecies expressed in certain quarters, the huge number of 175 entries has been received. This beats all previous records by about thirty per cent.
A great many women drivers are taking part this year,, and the British entry of 40 competitors has a large proportion. One of the best-known is Mias Dorothy Champney, who will drive a two- seater 14 h.p. six cylinder Riley.) In last year's International Alpina Trial she won the Coupe des Dames, the premier award for wo- men drivers.
Well-knows Women
Mrs. Wisdom, who is well known for her exploits at Brooklands, Is acting, as spare driver to her hus bund, T. H. Wisdom, in one of the team of "105" Talbots, while Miss Joan Richmond has won fame by motoring in a Riley car overland from Australia to England.
Then there is Mrs. Petre, whose trim figure at the wheel of her! Bugatti racer is so well known at Brooklands. Also Miss D. Patten, who will again drive a Speed Twenty Alvis.
Sweeping dramatically through the last two singles matcher against Australia, Sidney B. Wood, Jr., above; and Frank Shields, inset, carried American colours into the finals of the Davis cap cham- pionship at Wimbledon, but did not survive against the British de- fence,
