KEEP LEGS UP WHEN LEARNING TO DIVE
(By SID. G. HEDGES)
The chief thing to remember when you are helping a novice is that what seems quite simple to you may be quite terrifying and difficult to him. Don't try to gnj too fast with him.

hear about someone who swims at the first attempt. you may be quite sure, that there have us- ually been many bathes pre- viously, and probably even the ability to struggle a few yards.
It is just that ability to go the first two yards which is the resi difficulty: once that is accomplian
ed. the swimming of twenty or a hundred yards follows easily and naturally enough.
Your first task, therefore, is to give your Icarner confidence, and, you can do this by encouraging him to duck and roll and splash until he is thoroughly at home in the water. In the case of a girl,] it is particularly helpful for her
to be able to get to her feet when-
ever she wants to-and this needs considerable practice.

The difficulty is to get the ball to rise to obtain that long carry which the first class player can. Curiously enough to hit the ball up you have to hit it down. It is squeezed between the clubhead and the ground, dur ing that space of time in which it is in contact with the head of the club. Playera trying to hit down on
