Mr. W. A. Mackinlay, "appearing for the Hong Kong and China Gas Company, at the Coroner's inquiry {at the Central Magistracy yesterday into the gas explosion at West Point on May, 14, advanced a theory for the cause of the explosion.
He said that he might have misted the Court by stating the previous day that there were two gas rings in the Indian watchmen's hut. Actually there were two, but in dif- ferent compartments, and there was none where the watchmen were at the time of the explosion.
"We shall submit that it was ¡caused by the expansion of the metal. The walls of the gasometer are connected by a steel girder, and It was probably due to the expan- sion of that girder that the walls were pushed out", added Mr. Mac-
