A WIGHTMAN CUP

PROBLEM

Mrs. Godfree Must Be Considered.

SINGLES PLAYERS DECIDED

By STANLEY N. DOUST

London, May 6.

THE

trials for the two doubles pairs to represent Great Bri tain in the Wightman Cup match against USA.. at Wimbledon, on June 15 and 16, take place on the hard courts at Wimbledon on) Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, They are very interesting, and for the selectors very involved.

The regular pairs are Missi Mary Heeley and Miss Dorothy! Round. Miss Betty Nuthall and Miss James (who won their rub- ber in this match last year and also won the United States] national doubles championship). Miss "Billie" Yorke and Mrs. Whittingstall. Miss Dearman and Miss Lyle, who met with disasteri last week in the British hard; court championships at Bourne- mouth, when they were beaten by Mrs. L. A. Godfree and Miss, ¡Susan Noel.

Past Players To Note

In view of the result 1 wonder whether we are not thinking too much of the present generation of players and too little of those of the immediate past.

Mrs. Godfree, as Miss McKane, won the singles championship at Wimbledon in 1924. To-day she must seriously be considered for! lu place in the Wightman Cup team

Britain's Threat to America's Cup Launched

Whistles shrieked and thousands of Britons shouted cheers of good fortune as the "Endeavour," successor to Sir Thomas Lipton's "Shamrock," as challenger for the America's Cup, slid down the ways into Portsmouth Harbour, at Gosport, Eng., at her launching ceremonies. Inset, T. O M. Sopwith, who is taking up the battle for the "old mug" where Lipton's five Shamrocks left off. The "Endeavour" in 15th 'challanger.

Battle Of Giants At King's Park.

CLOSE LEAGUE TENNIS GAMES EXPECTED THIS WEEK

At King's park a battle of giants will take place to-morrow when two of the 100 per cent. "A" Division Lawn Tennis, League teams, the South China A.A. and the Indian Recreation Club will struggle to re- tain their position.

At the other end of the table the C.R.C. "B" team and the United Services will have the opportunity of climbing on to the bottom rung of the ladder.

No 100 per cent. points are at stake this week in the "B" Division; the C.R.C. and Recreio should both retain their position at the head of the table without difficulty.
