SWIMMERS BY
MISS COOPER
"Noel Ryan Should Win Titles."
BRITISH CHAMPION MAY SOON RETIRE
re-
Interviewed in Colombo cently Miss Joyce Cooper, Bri- tain's best woman 'swimmer, ex- pressed high praise for the swim- mers of Australia.
over
"For every one good girl swim- mer we have in England, Australia has 25. I was amazed at the gen- eral high standard of swimming out there, but then Australia' pos- seandd
so many advantages others in her beautiful bathing beaches and awimming pools. The Australian climate and the out- door life led by the people of that country combine to produce excel- lent athletes and in swimming Australla ranks among the world's greatest countries."
Asked whether she had met Frances Bult, the Australian Vie- Lorian Champion Sprinter who won the Victorian Championships, in February, 1933. Miss Cooper sald she bad met Thin "star" at Brisbane in the Australian Cham- pionships and had been beaten by her. But after that Frances Bult, had a break-down in health and has had to give up swimming for a while, and that is why we do not find her name in the list of swim- mers chosen to represent Australia In the Empire games in London next' August.
OTHER FAMOUS SWIMMERS "Who are the other great swim- mers you met on the trip?"
"There were Bonnie Menting and Edna Davey, two Olympic Swim- mers and Champions of Australia. I met Bonnie and we had a gruel- ling race with her. The judges gave her as finishing first but the time keepers made my time better. I believe it must have been a dead heal. Bonnie is a really clever swimmer and so is Edna Davey."
FOR THE EMPIRE GAMES "Have you Reen the names of Australia's swimmers for the Em-
} pire games?”
Miss Cooper hall not done so. but when shown her the list she made some interesting comments on them. She said that she had not met "Claire Dennis, who has eight Australian breast stroke re- cords to her credit from 100 yards Lo 500 metres, while she also holds a world's record. She thinks that Noel Ryan, the Australian cham. pion from N. 3. Wales is a wonder. ful swimmer who should win several events at the Empire Cames. Higginson and Clarké are alan very capable swimmers, while Lesley Thomson is Australia's best girl diver.
MAY RETIRE SOON "What are your plans for the future Miss Cooper was asked.
"I hope to take part in the Euro- pean Championships before the Empire Games in August. They are building, a, new bath in Wem- bley for the coming games and I am told that will be the best in England. I may visit America and compete in the championships and then I think I shall retire. I feel I have had quite enough of com- petitive swimming and one cannot go on enduring this strain too

when the entrenched volleyer finds the man at the back of the court has chosen an unexpected route. An- other pecularity about Sleem is that The never rests the racket in the left hand when he is waiting to receive nor during the rallies.. Froitzheim, the German player, who nearly beat Brooks at Wimbledon in 1914, had the same device for assisting the driver's concentration and so to speak obviating the necessity of an elaborate awing.
One fancied that Sleem's surren- der of the second set at love figures was part of his stealthy campaign, for in the third he came out like a refreshed campaigner and was call- ing the tune in most of the rallies. It seemed as if he could not miss the lines with his lobs, but he was Bot content to loft the ball all the' time, and made some good passing shole when he had lured Sharpe to the net. That service was nominal In strength on both sides and per haps that is why both men could undergo, without blanching, the tiring task of chasing the ball up and down and across the court.
Nothing out of the way happened in the other men's singles. Wheat- croft, with his screaming service, beat Kingsley in four sets, but had
anxious mornents in the. fourth, in which balls went into the net just at the wrong moment.
