THE CHINA MAI,
ANOTHER YEAR OF BAD TRADE IN COLONY
High Chinese Customs Import Tariffs
Urge For Lower Local Postal Rates
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
ANNUAL MEETING
Deploring yet another year of bad' trade in the Colony, the Hon. Mr. C. Gordon Mnckie, who presided at the Annual General Meeting of the Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce, held in the offices of the Chamber, last evening, pointed out that the decline, which had continued for some years past, had accelerated from the month of May onwards due to the heavy increases in the Chinese Customs Import Tariff.
As a result, local manufacturers were passing through a difficult time and many factories had closed down. The Chairman "regretted that in a time when the world's principal need was a greater flow of trade that the policies of Governments every where should be directed towards imposing further restrictions of various kinds.
